Instructional Coach - Teacher on Special Assignment - Mathematics K - 12

(Grant funded TOSA position)

The primary role of the Instructional Coach-Mathematics is to support teaching and learning through modeling, coaching and professional development to improve and accelerate student achievement through quality curriculum and instruction. The Instructional Coach-Mathematics is a certified, highly-qualified teacher who demonstrates leadership skills and has expertise in curriculum, instructional strategies, classroom management, and adult learning theory. The information contained in this job description is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for this position.

1. Research and provide content knowledge and resources to staff about learning and teaching mathematics-including:

a. Teaching strategies;

b. Assessment of mathematical skills;

c. Interpretation of assessment results, etc.


2. Research and prepare materials for use by the district, schools, and teachers-including:

a. Teaching strategies;

b. Assessment of mathematical skills;

c. Interpretation of assessment results, etc.


3. Ensure professional development materials are aligned with best practices in adult learning, including clearly outlined learning outcomes and methods for assessing acquisition and application of skills.


4. Ensure professional development training and coaching activities are grounded in research based best practices.


5. Provide support for the ongoing development, improvement and evaluation of the district’s instructional programs.


6. Assist with the development and implementation of the Common Core State Standards, curriculum/instructional alignment, and continuing professional development.


7. Develop strategies for helping teachers make changes in instructional practices, assisting in the identification of student needs and the differentiation of instructional support.


8. Provide technical assistance in collating and analyzing of data for instructional decision making.


9. Research and provide information and guidance regarding a range of effective and innovative mathematical practices through various activities such as:

a. Individual discussions;

b. Coaching sessions;

c. Demonstration lessons with pre-and post-discussion/analysis;

d. Professional Learning Communities;

e. Study groups;

f. Staff meetings; and

g. Professional development programs


10. Maintain paperwork consistently, appropriately and in a timely manner.


11. Facilitate pilot process for instructional materials as needed.


12. Team with classrooms and academic support teachers to guide the differentiation of student assignments and the assessment of student performance.


13. Maintain appropriate confidentiality.


14. Provide professional development at all district levels.


15. Work with the Superintendent and others to evaluate and enhance the mathematics curriculum.


16. Maintain commitment to ongoing professional development.
